Lumbar Radiculopathy
Lumbar radiculopathy — often called sciatica — is pain, numbness, or weakness traveling along a recognizable path from the low back into the leg or foot.
Symptoms
Pain may be sharp, electric, or burning and can occur with numbness, tingling, or weakness. The distribution and specific muscle changes help identify which nerve is involved.
Diagnosis
A focused examination evaluates strength, sensation, reflexes, nerve tension, gait, hips, and circulation. MRI is used when persistent symptoms, weakness, or procedural planning make it necessary.
Treatment options
Medication when appropriate, activity modification, and physical therapy are first-line for many patients. A selective epidural injection may reduce inflammation and can help confirm the symptomatic level.
When surgery is considered
Surgery becomes an option when severe symptoms persist despite appropriate care, weakness progresses, or a discrete compressive lesion matches the examination and imaging.
When to seek care promptly
New bowel or bladder dysfunction, saddle numbness, or rapidly worsening leg weakness requires urgent evaluation.
